We had another exciting week! Below is an update on what the Yellow Room children learned in school.

Themes this week:

  • Began a study on the Post Office and the job of mail carriers.
  • Talked all about the ones we love and cherish as we got ready for our class Valentine's Day celebration.
  • In honor of Presidents' Day, we read and discussed the contributions of two great U.S. Presidents: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Classroom Activities:

  • In writing, we read Hug Machine by Scot Campbell. As a follow, the Yellow Room students each wrote and illustrated a page in our very own adapted version of this whimsical story of a little boy that loves to hug.
  • As a second writing activity, we wrote a response to the prompt Love is and illustrated our words.
  • For art, we made our likeness wearing a tall black stovepipe hat and beard just as the great, President Lincoln.
  • Tying together our knowledge of the Post Office and Presidents' day, the kids made patterns using different stamps of the American Flag and Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Obama and Trump.
  • Letters of the week are 'A' and 'M'. We followed up with a story, a jingle, a cheer for both letters and filling out our journal pages.
  • In writing, we first discussed all the information needed on the front of a postal letter. We reviewed: mailing address, return address, and stamp. We then wrote a special Valentine message in our Valentine's Day cards, put them in their envelopes, addressed them, and finished up with a stamp. On Monday we took a short walk to the mailbox and hand delivered our cards!
  • This week, the children were busy playing in the Classroom Post Office. You will all notice many notes and postcards going home that we addressed and stamped to friends and teachers.
  • In math, we graphed different colored candy hearts. We tracked and followed as our friends each took a turn to pick a candy heart from a cup.
  • In science we predicted if candy hearts would sink or float in different liquids.  One jar had soda, a second water, and a third seltzer.  After making our predictions, we completed the experiment and saw the results in front of our eyes.

Highlight of the Week:

  • Our Valentine Celebration!!! The kids had so much delivering their Valentine's to each other in the morning.

Books we read:
  • The Story of Abraham Lincoln, by Patricia A. Pingry
  • The Story of George Washington, by Patricia A. Pingry
  • Hug Machine, Scott Campbell
  • President's Day, by Anne Rockwell
  • Amelia Bedelia's First Valentine, by Herman Parish

Songs we sang:
  • Put A Little Love In Your Heart
  • H-E-A-R-T, The heart shape says I Love You
  • My Favorite Things

Places we visited:
  • In library, Lindsay read Sylvester And The Magic Pebble, by William Steig
  • In PE, we played the chase game.
  • On Monday we met Cara, a dental hygienist. She talked to us all about dental hygiene and helped us practice brushing teeth on her toy friend Danny the Dog.

Enjoy the photos and have a great holiday weekend.

The Yellow Room Teachers

Week of 2/4

2/8/2019

Dear Yellow  Room Families,

We had another exciting week! Below is an update on what the Yellow Room children learned this week in school.

  • This week we began our study unit on Dental Health and the job of a dentist.
  • We also celebrated Lunar New Year!

Classroom Activities:

  • Letters of the week are 'R' and 'K'. We followed up with a story, a  jingle, a cheer for both letters and filling in journal pages.
  • For math, the children all "estimated" how many candies would fit in a mouth shaped space.  After they wrote their "estimate" down, they glued colorful candies and counted the "actual" amount.
  • In writing, we wrote a response to the prompt, "I keep my teeth healthy by...". We drew an adorable illustration to accompany our writings.
  • For art, we made our likeness and glued down ten teeth on the top of our mouth and ten on the bottom for a total of 20 teeth.
  • In science, we asked the question, "Can my teeth change color from what I drink?"  After discussing the similarities between teeth and eggs, the kids were asked if cleaning an eggshell would be similar to cleaning their teeth.  We first boiled some eggs and then immersed one in Coke, in fruit punch, water, and milk.  Magically, the eggs in soda and fruit punch turned color while the others in water and milk remained white.  This inspired the kids to wonder if brushing the eggshell would clean it.  So, that is exactly what we did.  We placed some Aquafresh on a toothbrush and brushed away the stains.  This experiment emphasized the importance of brushing away all food residues and trying to eat “teeth friendly” foods.
  • For our Lunar New Year celebration the children enjoyed making paper lanterns and origami pigs.
  • As Valentine's Day nears, the children created lovely cards to mail out. Using crayons, they drew hearts on a blank card and then water-colored over them and saw the hearts pop right through.
  • In writing, we wrote down Valentine messages in our one of a kind homemade Valentine's Day cards.

Books we read:

  • Going To The Dentist, by Anne Civerdi
  • You Think It's Easy Being The Tooth Fairy, by Sheri Belle-Rehwoldt
  • How Many Teeth, by Paul Showers
  • Let's Meet a Dentist, Bridget Heos
  • Why Do I Brush My Teeth?, by Angela Royston
  • Chinese New Year, by David F. Marx
  • Lanterns and Firecrackers, by Jonny Zucker

Songs we sang:

  • Jolly "R" and "K" Jingle.
  • If you brushed your teeth today, clap your hands.
  • Jeremiah was a Bullfrog.

Places we visited:

  • We participated in our monthly school wide assembly.
  • In library, Lindsay read Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, by Judi Barrett

Enjoy the photos and have a great holiday weekend.

Sincerely,

The Yellow Room Teachers

We had another exciting week! Below is an update on what the Yellow Room children learned this week in school.

Themes this week:
  • This week we continued our second author study of the year on the incomparable Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss.
  • We also learned about Groundhog's Day.

Classroom Activities:
  • We practiced our rhyming skills by writing in three rhyming words on the infamous red and white striped tall hat worn by the Cat in the Hat.
  • For math this week, we estimated how many squares long are our feet. After reading The Foot Book, we traced one of our feet on a piece of paper and then glued down one inch squares straight across. After counting the squares we wrote down the number and compared it to our estimate.
  • After reading What Pet Should I Get?, the Yellow Room kids wrote responses to the prompt "I would get....". We discussed how Dr. Seuss used his imagination to make up the beloved characters in his books. We followed up by using our own creativity to combine two animals and create new ones. We then sketched them in black sharpie and used bold water colors to add the finishing touches. These one of a kind creations are now adorning the Pet Shop window in the hallway. We hope you stop by for a minute and check them out.
  • Letters of the week are 'P' and 'B'. We followed up with stories, jingles, cheers and filled out our letter journal pages.
  • For cooking, the kids assembled different sized pancake circles to resemble groundhogs. They added mini marshmallows and chocolate chips for facial features.
  • In math, we continued our study on measurement. We once again practiced measuring each other. In pairs, they worked to find out how many Loraxes tall they were.
  • For an art activity, the kids made a groundhog. Each child received a cut-out outline of the head and added details. As a follow up, the children graphed their prediction for Groundhog's day. They glued their groundhog together and placed it on the column of their choice. We can't wait to find out if Phil will predict an early Spring or longer Winter. Stay tuned!

Book we read:
  • The Cat in the Hat, by Dr. Seuss
  • The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, by Dr. Seuss
  • The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss
  • The Sneetches, by Dr. Seuss
  • Fox in Socks, by Dr. Seuss
  • Hop on Pop, by Dr. Seuss

Songs we sang:
  • "Let It Be"
  • "Feeling Groovy"

Places we visited:
  • In library, Lindsay read Jumanji, by Chris Van Allsburg.
  • In PE, we practiced our push ups and planks.
  • In Yoga, we saw the light in each other and practiced our lotus pose.

Enjoy the photos and have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

The Yellow Room Teachers
