Week of 6/3

6/6/2019

Dearest Yellow Room Families,

The time has come to say goodbye to the Yellow Room class of 2019!  We have learned and shared a lot of new concepts and skills, participated in many fun and exciting events, played and laughed every day.

But most of all, we have made many new friendships along the way that we are sure will continue to grow.

Your children have brought joy and happiness to our classroom and we are very fortunate to have been a part of this incredible journey.

Thank you all for the support, friendships, kindness and most of all for sharing with us the most incredible group of kids.

We wish the Yellow Room children the best of luck in their new endeavors.

Have a happy and healthy summer!

Warm regards,

Alex A., Rosa, and Vanessa

Dear Yellow Room Families,

We had another exciting week! Below is an update on what the Yellow Room children learned this week in school.

Themes this week:
  • We began our study about our home city, NEW YORK!
  • Discussed that New York City is made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island.
  • We also ended the week talking about, Cinco de Mayo.
Classroom Activities:

  • The children were so inspired from our discussions about NYC, they began to make their own landmarks in our free art center. We have begun to create a city skyline in the classroom that includes the Empire State Building, and other skyscrapers. Remembering what we learned last week, the children reused newspaper to recreate the incredible NYC skyline.
  • For writing, the kids published another class book about New York City! After reading about many landmarks and places that make our city so unique , the children wrote a "postcard" to a friend suggesting a fun place for them to visit.
  • After reading about the Empire State Building, we estimated how many windows tall we are on a classroom replica of the infamous landmark. After writing down our prediction, we measured ourselves and took a photo revealing the actual estimate.
  • To get ready for our fiesta on Monday, the children worked together to make a pinata from scratch.  We can't wait to break it open during our celebration on Monday.
  • For writing, we thought of a delightful response to the prompt, "I broke open the piñata and out popped.."
  • For math, the kids created and extended patterns using traditional Mexican images.

Books we read:
  • Larry Gets Lost in New York City,  by Michael Mullin and John Skewes

Dear Yellow Room Families,

We had another exciting week! Below is an update on what the Yellow Room children learned this week in school.

Themes this week:

  • This week the Yellow Room went green for Earth Day!

Classroom Activities:

  • We began our study by first discussing and reading about our mother planet, Earth! After reading a book with some fun science facts, we used eyedroppers with blue and green watercolors to create our own Earth on a round coffee filter.
  • To accompany our colorful planets, the kids recalled a fact that we discussed and wrote a response to "Earth..."
  • In preparing for Earth Day, the kids all made their own likeness. Using ONLY reused materials such as, vinyl records, magazines, caps and others. We all agreed that reusing materials was better for our planet than making more garbage.
  • In science, the Yellow Room discussed the essential “Three R’s”; reduce, reuse and recycle.  We reached into our class "garbage bag" and sorted different items and placed each one in the correct recycling bin. We learned that we need to separate plastic, paper and cans. By remembering the three R’s, we can celebrate Earth Day every day and continue to help in keeping our “environment” healthy for everyone.
  • For fun, we made slime.  We enjoyed mixing together dry and wet ingredients and watch them mix together to make colorful slime.

Books we read:

  • Earth Day, by Clara Cella
  • Our Earth, by Anne Rockwell
  • The Womp World, by Bill Peet

Week of 4/8

4/12/2019

Dear Yellow Room Families,,

We had another exciting week! Below is an update on what the Yellow Room children learned this week in school.

Themes this week:
  • We continued our in depth study on Life Cycles. This week we focused on the four stages of butterflies:  the egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and then finally the butterfly.

Classroom Activities:
  • For math, we discussed symmetry; when one shape becomes exactly like another if you flip or turn it.  We first observed the symmetry in shapes such as a circle, square and heart. Then, we observed a variety of butterfly wings and learned that they have two wings that are symmetrical. The children then had a turn to make their own symmetrical wings with markers and tissue paper.
  • As a follow up math activity, the children sequenced circles to form a caterpillar. We then practiced writing our numbers from 1 to 10 on each circle. We have been working so hard this year on writing our numbers!
  • We recreated the four stages of a butterfly by sequencing them in a one-of-a-kind art project. First, the children glued down ripped strips of brown paper as tree branches. Then, they glued down four leaves, placed a model magic ball as an egg on one and a caterpillar on the second. Next, they glued brown craft paper as a chrysalis on the third and lastly a butterfly on the fourth! These colorful constructions are hanging outside the classroom for all to enjoy.
  • For science, we sequenced the life cycle of a butterfly. First we placed colorful pictures in order and then wrote each stage down. As a follow up, we used stamps to recreate the four stages.
  • In Science, we conducted another groovy experiment. We began by pouring milk in a dish. We then added a few drops of food coloring a saw the color begin to mix in. We then questioned, what would happen if we "mixed" in different liquids? We gently dabbed the milk with a q-tip with water and saw no reaction, then dabbed a the milk with a q-tip with vinegar and again so no reaction. Lastly, we dabbed the milk with liquid soap and magically saw the colors spread away from the soap, finally a chemical reaction.
  • THANK YOU to everyone who came in and joined us for our Writopia film screenings.

Books we read:
  • Charlie Caterpillar, by Dom DeLuise
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle
  • Becoming Butterflies, by Anne Rockwell
  • Caterpillars on the Move, by Abby Klein
  • Born to be a Butterfly, by Karen Wallace

Songs we sang:
  • In Music, we sang Simple Gifts.

Places we visited:
  • In PE, we worked on crossing a balance beam.
  • In library Lindsay continued reading Season of the Sandstorms (A Magic Tree House Book) by, Mary Pope Osborne.

Enjoy the photos and have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Week of 4/1

4/5/2019

Dear Yellow Room Families,,

We had another exciting week! Below is an update on what the Yellow Room children learned this week in school.

Theme this week:
  • We began our in depth study on Life Cycles. This week we focused on the stages of plants.

Classroom Activities:
  • Our little scientists began our study by listening to the book From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons. We then followed up with a one of kind project.....we planted seeds!  We were elbow deep in soil as the children worked in groups planting different flower seeds, such as: Poppies, Zinnias, and Sunflowers.
  • We continued our discussion on plants by discovering that some plants are edible and grow from beans. We read One Bean by Anne Rockwell.  The children learned that a bean plant has five stages: the seed, roots, shoot, stem and leaves and a full-grown plant – words that quickly became part of our vocabulary.  We germinated lima beans and grew them in our very own greenhouses that are hanging on our window inside the classroom.  We witnessed the seed coat open and the shoot grows incredibly fast before our eyes!
  • In our art center, the children used their finger muscles to rip paper and create their very own yellow sunflower.
  • As a follow up, for writing we asked ourselves what will happen to our bean and what will our bean need to grow. The children recalled so many facts from all of our discussions this week. These writings are accompanied by illustrations and will hang in the hallway for you to enjoy.
  • In science, we reviewed the parts of a flower plant and conducted an exciting experiment. After passing around white carnations the children noticed it did not have any roots. We then questioned how our flowers would drink water without the roots. After adding a few drops of food coloring to water we placed six white flowers in six different cups of water. After observing for three days, we concluded that plants drink water from the ground up through their roots. The water traveled up the stem and into the petals of the flower. Although, our flowers didn’t have roots anymore they were still able to pull water up from the cup into the stem and up through the flower to the petals.
  • Lastly, the Yellow Room students looked into their crystal balls and predicted what their lima bean plants will look like once they are fully grown. These drawings are up in the classroom, so come on in and take a look.
  • In math, the children each received a math mat in the shape of a flower pot with a number in the center. They then had to correctly identify the number and count out REAL beans/seeds and place it on the mat.  They also created and extended their very own flower pattern.

Books we read:
  • Lola Plants a Garden, by Anna McQuinn
  • One Bean, by Anne Rockwell
  • How a Seed Grows, by Helen J. Jordan
  • Once There Was a Seed, by Judith Anderson and Mike Gordon
  • Grow it! A Child's Play Book, Illustrated by Georgie Birkett
  • The Curious Garden, by Peter Brown

Songs we sang:
  • In Music, we sang "Feeling Groovy. "

Places we visited:
  • In PE, we worked on our bounce catches.
  • In yoga, we worked on our lotus pose.
  • In library Lindsay began a second chapter book with us. We completed the first chapter of Season of the Sandstorms (A Magic Tree House Book) by, Mary Pope Osborne

We had another exciting week! Below is an update on what the Yellow Room children learned this week in school.

Themes this week:
  • We discussed and celebrated Mardi Gras!
  • Finished up learning about Leprechauns.

Classroom Activities:
  • After reading and learning all about Leprechauns, the Yellow Room kids made a leprechaun trap in anticipation of catching Lucky the school Leprechaun. They also made their own likeness as a Leprechaun. To accompany the art work, they wrote a response to  "If I caught a Lerprechaun...".
  • Catching a Leprechaun was trickier than we thought. But, give the kids some credit, they tried. After a failing to catch him with our trap, we learned that Lucky had left us a game to play. Using our thinking skills, the kids solved all the riddles of Lucky's scavenger hunt. After running around on the third and second floor, our last clue led us straight back into the Yellow room where we found rainbow cupcakes with green frosting. It was a well deserved treat!
  • Thank you to Erin Ahrens for coming in and teaching us about Mardi Gras. After she read us a story, we all got dressed up in colorful beaded necklaces and paraded around the school as the Yellow Krewe. Afterwards, Erin treated us to delicious King's Cake.
  • To conclude our study on the Library, we met Theresa. She works as a librarian at the NYPL Bloomingdale branch on 100th st. She read us the book Clive Is a Librarian, by Jessica Spanyol and told us all about her job. She even had time to answer ALL of our questions.
  • Letters of the week are "Y" and "Z". We followed up with a story, a jingle, a cheer for both letters and finished up our Alphabet journal. YAY!!!!!
  • In math, we used unifix cubes to measure Leprechauns.  We also counted all the gold coins that were magically left all around the building by Lucky.

Highlight of the Week:
  • Science! After learning that Leprechauns hide their pots of gold at the end of rainbows, we wondered what a rainbow actually is. We then read and learned that rainbows are an arch of colors that we see when sunlight hits water drops in the air. As a follow up, we went to the tables and used skittles to review the color order of the rainbow on a small plate. We then remembered that rainbows need water to form and after gently pouring some water on our plates, we magically saw our very own rainbows form.

Books we read:
  • Let It Rain, by Maryann Cocca-Leffler
  • Ten Lucky Leprechauns, by Kathryn Heling and Deborah Hembrook
  • The Littlest Leprechaun, by Brandi Dougherty
  • The Night Before St. Patrick's Day, by Natasha Wing
