Week of 2/11

2/15/2019

Dear Star Room Family,

What a great week we had in the classroom! Here are some of the fun activities we enjoyed during classroom.

Theme this week:
  • We continued exploring our feelings this week, moving on to the emotion of sad. At circle time, we looked at pictures of sad children, which helped prompt a conversation about how we know when someone is sad and why. We also created a class list of things that make us feel sad. We celebrated Valentine’s Day with yummy treats and  filling our mailboxes with Valentine’s Day cards. Thank you so much to parents that volunteered to bring in party items!

Books we read:
  • Valentine Mice by Bethany Roberts
  • Biscuit’s Valentine’s Day by Alyssa Satin Capucilli

Songs we sang:
  •  “If You’re Happy and You Know It”
  •  “Love Grows”
  • “If You’re Sad and You Know It”

Places we went:
  • At Art with Julia and Janae, we painted wooden shapes with white paint, explored instant snow at the light table and enjoyed the placing shapes on a twisty trail. The wooden shapes will be used to create a large, abstract structure in the future.
  • We read The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond and took out library books during Library with Lindsay.
  • We sang Skinamarinky Dink, ABCs, A Bushel and a Peck and more with Noel in Music.
  • We played in 2nd floor indoor gym.

Classroom Activities:
  • We finished making special Valentine’s Day cards for our families. In addition to gluing on tissue paper pieces to a heart shape, we added special stickers to the inside.
Reminders:
No School, Tuesday, 2/19 for President’s Day

Enjoy the photos and have a great weekend! As always, please feel free to reach out through email with questions or concerns.

Warmly,
Sarah and Jill

Week of 2/4

2/8/2019

Dear Star Room 2AM Families,

What a great week we had in the classroom! Here are some of the fun activities we enjoyed during classroom.

Theme this week:
  • We started exploring our feelings this week, beginning with the emotion of happy. At circle time, we looked at pictures of happy children, which helped prompt a conversation about how we know when someone is happy and why. Some children responded because they are smiling or were with someone they loved. We also created a class list of items and activities that make us happy.
Books we read:
  • Sledding by Elizabeth Wintrop
  • Won’t You Be My Kissaroo? by Joanne Ryder

Songs we sang:
  • “The Snowball Song”
  • “If You’re Happy and You Know It”
  • “Love Grows”

Places we went:
  • At art with Julia and Janae, we “painted” with black sand, explored instant snow at the light table and enjoyed the shapes in a water basin.
  • We read We Are In a Book by Mo Willems and took out library books during Library with Lindsay.
  • We sang It’s a Small World, Days of the Week, ABCs, Bushel and a Peck and more with Noel in Music.
  • We played in 2nd floor indoor gym.

Classroom Activities:
  • To start the exploration of our feelings, we began making special Valentine’s Day cards for our families. Be on the lookout for something special coming home soon! We also used Valentine’s Day stickers and stamps to decorate our mailboxes in anticipation of Valentine’s Day cards.
Reminders:
  • Valentine’s Day Cards due Tuesday 2/12/19 (only if you wish to participate)
Enjoy the photos and have a great weekend! As always, please feel free to reach out through email with questions or concerns.

Warmly,
Sarah and Jill

Week of 1/28

2/1/2019

Dear Star Room 2AM Families,

What a great week we had in the classroom! Here are some of the fun activities we enjoyed during classroom.

Theme this week:
  • We continued our exploration of Winter this week. We reviewed some of the characteristics of the season and referenced our chart about favorite Winter activities. We also worked on sequencing skills, selecting what picture will come next in a series of picture cards. It weaves in nicely with our Winter curriculum, as the sequencing cards are of a snowman and penguin. We also played several shape games at circle time, practicing identifying and selecting certain shapes.
Books we read:
  • The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats
  • If It’s Snowy and You Know It, Clap Your Paws, by Kim Norman

Songs we sang:
  • “The Snowball Song”
  • “The Weather Song”
Places we went:
  • At art with Julia and Janae, we painted with different hues of watercolors on a paper tablecloth, explored the use of color oil pastels on black paper and enjoyed the shapes on the light table.
  • We read a The Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone and took out library books during Library with Lindsay
  • We sang It’s a Small World, Days of the Week, ABCs, Bushel and a Peck and more with Noel in Music
  • We played in 2nd floor indoor gym
  • Continuing our winter exploration, we created winter trees to decorate our classroom walls. The children glued a bare, brown tree to a light blue piece of construction paper. Then they used small, circular sponge brushes dipped in white paint to stamp snow onto their tree and the background. Silver glitter paint added a nice sparkly touch to their Winter scene as well. We also created snowman snow globes by gluing small, medium and large white circles onto a blue “snowglobe”background.
Reminders:
  • Valentine’s Day Cards due Tuesday 2/12/19 (only if you wish to participate)
Enjoy the photos and have a great weekend! As always, please feel free to reach out through email with questions or concerns.

Warmly,
Sarah and Jill
