HOUR OF CODE

12/18/2018

Week of 12/10

12/14/2018

Hello Sky Room Families!

We had another festive week in the Sky Room! We are currently learning all about Christmas. Here are a few highlights of the exciting activities we have been doing this week:

Classroom Activities:
  • We used glue sticks, tissue paper, glue, and glitter to create individual Earths – as shown on our “Peace on Earth” Holiday bulletin board
  • We decorated Christmas trees! Each student painted a tree, then told us how many ornaments they wanted to count out and glue onto their tree. We practiced our counting with this activity, but also focused on our positional words, as we asked the students to place the star on top of the tree.
  • We worked on our Holiday craft for all of you! The students had a great time creating their gifts for you – which will remain a surprise until next week!
  • Each student made Gingerbread boys and girls! They had a great time adding accessories to their gingerbread people.

Songs We Sang:

  • “Here Comes Santa Claus"
  • “Santa Claus is Coming To Town"
  • “Jingle Bells”
  • “Feliz Navidad"

Books We Read:

  • Gus the Christmas Star ,by Frank Remkiewicz
  • Merry Christmas, from Biscuit, by Alyssa Satin Capucilli
  • Corduroy’s Christmas Surprise, by Don Freeman

Important Dates:
  • December 19th is our Holiday party from 11:15-11:45 am
  • MCS will be closed from 12/21/18-1/7/19 for the Holiday break

We hope you have a great weekend,

The Sky Room Teachers

Week of 12/3

12/6/2018

Hello Sky Room Families!

We had another fun-filled week in the Sky Room! We are learning more about the holidays and Hanukkah! Here are a few highlights of the exciting activities we have been doing this week:

Classroom Activities:
  • We worked on our top secret Auction project using paint and a canvas
  • We cooked latke’s! We helped Desiree to combine and mix the potatoes, onions, egg and salt to create delicious latke’s!
  • We decorated menorahs! We counted out 9 flames and glued them down to the paper candles. Then, we decorated the menorah with gems.
  • Lucas’ mom came in to play some fun Christmas games, and decorate Christmas trees! We even had a special treat at the end of the day.
  • The Sky Room students attempted a coding activity! This week is the Hour of Code, and after explaining to the students that we were going to participate in a listening and moving activity, the students followed my ‘command’ in order to walk all the way around the classroom starting on the rug and ending on the rug. The students successfully made their way moving around the classroom by listening to my directions (i.e. Take two steps, 5 hops, etc.) and then moving their bodies. We took a fun little video of this activity as well that you can find on Weebly!

Songs We Sang:
  • “Jingle Bells"
  • “December Song"
  • “Latke’s Latke’s Good To Eat"

Books We Read:
  • My Two Holidays, by Danielle Novack
  • Latkes, Latkes, Good to Eat, by Naomi Howland
  • The First Night of Hanukkah, by Nicki Weiss

Important Dates:
  • December 19th is our Holiday party from 11:15-11:45

Next week we begin to learn all about Christmas!

We hope you have a great weekend,

Laura, Desiree, and Ashley
