Week of 2/11

2/15/2019

Hello Sky Room Families!

This week the Sky Room has been continuing to learn all about Valentine’s Day! Here are some of fun activities that we’ve been enjoying!

Classroom Activities:

  • We made silly Valentine’s Day animal faces. The students chose from a panda, tiger, or bunny to create using all different size and color hearts.
  • We made pink slime! The students were fascinated by this science activity. By mixing a bottle of Elmer’s glue, baking soda, contact solution and food coloring, we watched this pink slime come to life. The students LOVED holding the slime and described how ‘gooey’ it felt.
  • On Thursday, the students passed around their Valentine’s for each other. Each student was given a bag to decorate, and we took turns passing out the Valentine’s. The students did such a good job waiting their turns!
  • We made red pancakes! The students had so much fun with this cooking activity. They loved watched the white batter turn from beige to red – and loved eating the pancakes even more!

Songs We Sang:

  • If You Love Me and You Know It Clap Your Hands
  • I’m A Little Valentine (Sung to I’m A Little Teapot)
  • 5 Little Hearts

Books We Read:

  • The Biggest Kiss, by Joanna Walsh
  • Pete The Cat Valentine’s Day Is Cool, by James Dean and Kimberly Dean
  • I Love You All Day Long, by Francesca Rusackas

Reminders:

  • MCS will be closed from Monday, 2/18 and will re-open on Thursday, 2/21 for President’s Day.

Have a great long weekend and looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday, 2/21!

Week of 2/4

2/8/2019

Hello Sky Room Families!

This week the Sky Room has been continuing to learn all about our feelings and began to learn about Valentine’s Day! We have discussed what it means to feel love for someone or something, and ways to express these feelings. Here are some of fun activities that we’ve been enjoying!

Classroom Activities:
  • Each student made Valentine’s Day cards for YOU! After thoughtful consideration, each student chose which colored heart (red, pink, purple) they wanted to make, and decorated them using stickers and hearts. They also glued down a lovely poem and placed it inside of the heart.

  • We created an AB pattern by choosing two different colored hearts – their choices were red, pink, and purple. This type of activity lays the foundation for solid pre-math skills!

  • The students worked on their fine motor skills and strengthening their hand muscles by either ripping up pieces of paper or using scissors to cut small pieces. Though this may sound easy, this is quite a difficult task! After they ripped/cut the pieces of paper, they were asked to glue the paper inside of a paper heart. The heart was then glued onto a piece of pink paper that read “I Love You To Pieces”. This project is currently featured on the bulletin board inside our classroom!

Songs We Sang:
  • “If You Love Me and You Know It"
  • “5 Little Hearts All In A Row”

  • We had another fun-filled school-wide assembly!

Books We Read:
  • “Big Heart!”, by Joan Holub
  • “Splat the Cat: Funny Valentine”, by Rob Scotton
  • “Won’t You Be My Kissaroo?”, by Joanne Ryder

Reminders:
  • Please send in your children's Valentine’s Day cards. We will be having the students hand out their cards on Thursday, February 14th in class.
  • MCS will be closed from Monday, 2/18 and will re-open on Thursday, 2/21 for President’s Day

Have a great weekend!

Week of 1/28

2/1/2019

Hello Sky Room Families!

The Sky Room has been feeling ALL the feels this week as we have been learning all about FEELINGS! We have explored our own feelings by talking about what makes us feel happy, sad, angry, nice, and silly (just to name a few!). Here are some of fun activities that we’ve been enjoying!

Classroom Activities:

  • After introducing the concept of what feelings are, we showed the students photos of children looking happy, sad, angry, and silly. After making the facial expression that corresponded with each feeling, the children picked one feeling to depict for their self portrait. Needless to say, we had some very dramatic poses/looks, which are now featured outside on our “Feelings” bulletin board!
  • We sat on the rug to check out our “feelings portraits” and created a story based around what the students observed from each photo. The students helped to create this story by looking at each portrait, and stating “she looks happy!” or “he looks silly!”. We then prompted and scaffolded the conversation to allow for the students to come up with reasons as to why they were feeling that particular way. Our impromptu “Sky Room Story” turned out to be quite the emotional roller coaster. :)
  • We assembled and cooked our very own “Emotional Pizza Faces” using English muffins, mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, thinly sliced cherry tomatoes, and sliced peppers. The students were instructed to first add the sauce, then the cheese, and then were given the liberty to add on their own "emotion" to the pizza using the rest of their ingredients. They had a great time making (but mostly eating) their pizza faces.
Songs We Sang:

  • “Winter Weather"
  • “Feelings!"
  • “The Story of My Feelings”, by Laurie Berkner
Books We Read:

  • “Gus Gets Mad”, by Frank Remkiewicz
  • “The Happy Bee”, by Ian Beck
  • “I Was So Mad”, by Mercer Mayer
Have a wonderful weekend!
