Week of 2/11

2/15/2019

Dear Red Room Teachers,

Love was in the air this week in the Red Room. Here are some of our heartfelt activities:

Theme:
  • Valentine’s Day

Books We Read:

  • The Queen of Hearts by, Mary Engelbreit
  • Love, Ruby Valentine by, Laurie Friedman

Centers:

  • We colored boxes to hold our Valentines in and made a special gift for a loved one in the art center.
  • The children decorated hearts and wrote Vday messages  in the writing center.
  • In the math center the children measured the length of a paper heart using heart candies.
  • In the science center, the children explored momentum by building different ramps with wooden blocks and rolling objects such as toy cars and balls down them. We then made a chart of which objects rolled the farthest and the fastest.
  • We cooked Brunch for Lunch in the cooking center! The children worked together to write menus and make a delicious lunch for each other. The menu included grilled cheese, pancakes, and fruit parfaits.

Something Fun We Did:

  • Dental hygienist Clara visited us to teach us about taking care of our teeth!

The Red Room Teachers

Week of 2/4

2/8/2019

Dear Red Room Families,

We had a lot to do in the Red Room this week! Here are some of our activities:

Theme:
  • Mail and the Post Office

Some Books We Read:

  • A Day with a Mail Carrier, by Jan Kottke
  • It Came In The Mail ,by Ben Clanton
  • Hello, My Name Is Octicorn , by Kevin Diller and Justin Lowe
  • Dragon Dance, by Joan Holub
Centers:
  • In the math center we made patterns using different pictures of stamps. We also sorted an envelope of stamps and made a bar graph to compare the different amounts.
  • In the writing center we learned about the different parts of a letter. We then worked on writing short letters to a loved one. We addressed and stamped the envelopes and took a mini trip to the mailbox on the corner. The kids can’t wait for their letters to be delivered in the mail!
  • The children built a huge post office in the Block center and enjoyed taking turns delivering mail to each other.
  • We read the book Hello, My Name Is Octicorn which is about a half unicorn, half octopus named Octi. Octi felt like he didn’t have any friends because no one else looked like him though he liked a lot of the same things as others. We discussed that even though people may look different from each other, they can still have a lot in common and be friends. So, the kids decorated their own Octicorns and wrote letters to Octi telling him all the things they have in common. Octi now has eighteen new friends in the Red Room!

Week of 1/28

2/1/2019

Dear Red Room Families,

The cold weather made it an ideal week to stay cozy inside and read books. Here are some of the things we worked on.

Theme:
  • Author Study: Kevin Henkes

The Kevin Henkes Books We Read:

  • Chester’s Way
  • Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse
  • Julius The Baby of the World
  • Lilly’s Big Day
  • Penny and Her Marble
  • Chrysanthemum
  • Owen
  • Wemberly Worried
  • Shelia Rae, The Brave

Centers:

  • In the math center, we compared Chrysanthemum’s name with our own. Each child observed the letters that each name begins and ends with. The children then linked together a row of thirteen unifix cubes for Chrysanthemum's name and then made a separate row for the amount of letters in their own name. They were then able to compare how much longer or shorter their names were and then filled in a chart with the results.
  • At the art center, the children painted and designed their own purple purses and then filled them with special tokens to represent the books we read.
  • After working as a whole group on a chart describing the recurring character of “Lilly”, each child drew a self portrait and wrote three descriptive sentences about his or herself in the writing center.
  • We whipped up some of Kevin Henkes' favorite character recipes when we made “Mr. Slinger’s Cheesy Rice Crisps” and “Wemberly's Worry-Free Punch” in the cooking center.

Who Was In The Barn?
