Week of 1/14

1/18/2019

Dear Polar Bear Families,
Reminders:

  • The Montclare Children’s School Auction is Friday the 25th. The Polar Bears created a lovely piece of art to auction off. We hope to see you all there!
  • There is no school on Monday January 21st and Tuesday the 22nd for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend.
Theme: Snow and Snowflakes
Letter of the week: S

Some books we read this week:

  • Stone Soup, by Marcia Brown
  • Snowmen at Night, by Caralyn Buehner
  • The Snowy Nap, by Jan Brett
  • Best in Snow, by April Sayre

Classroom Activities

  • Our person of the week was Eric and Eric was also the first of our Polar Bears to turn 4 on Wednesday. Happy Birthday Eric!
  • This week we discussed snow, What is snow and where does it come from? We learned that snow is made up of millions of snowflakes and that snowflakes always have 6 sides and are made from water that freezes. We watched a really cool video of a snowflake forming and we observed that each snowflake is different from the other ones, just like people.
  • The Letter of the week was “S”. We practiced making the letter “S” with our Handwriting With Out Tears materials and read our scholastic phonics book “Seals Silly Sandwich”, by Dorothy Sklar.
  • On Tuesday we read the book “Stone Soup” because “S” is our letter of the week. We asked all the children to bring in a vegetable in and Thursday made our own stone soup for snack on Friday. Yum!
  • Our art project this week was making snowflakes for our bulletin board. We glued puzzle pieces to craft sticks to mimic the crystals of a snowflake and then painted them white and added glitter to make them shine.
  • Friday we celebrated all our January birthdays. Happy Birthday to Eric, Aarin, and Arthur!
Enjoy your weekend

Karen, Rebecca, and Marvin
