Week of 10/1

10/5/2018

Hi Everyone!

Reminders:

  • There is no school next week on Monday October 8 and Tuesday October 9th for the Columbus Day holiday.
  • Scholastic Book Orders from the October flyer are due on Wednesday October 10th
  •  On October 19th from 9-10:30 am we will be having a field trip to the farmers market around the corner. We will need 7 chaperones to help out. If you are interested in helping out please contact our class parents (Angela Fanon and Tanisha Bellur).
Theme: Apples
Letter of the week: F

Some books we read this week:

  • 10 apples up on top, by Dr. Seuss
  • Apples for Everyone, by Jill Esbaum
  • The biggest apple ever, by Steven Kroll
  • Discovering my world, a trip to an apple orchard, by Melvin Berger
Classroom Activities:

  • This week was all about apples and how they are a big part of fall. At morning meeting we talked about where apples grow, the different parts of an apple, and what we can make with apples. For our movement we pretended to go to an orchard and sequenced picking apples, bringing them home, cutting them up, mixing them with sugar and cinnamon and sugar, rolling out dough and making a pie.
  • Friday we had a taste test of red, yellow, and green apples and graphed which apples we liked best. It was a close one but the red ones won!
  • We read “10 apples up on top” and made our own number lines using pictures of apples that we could clip on top of a picture of ourselves. The children worked individually with Karen to recognize their numbers, sequence them, and then clip them on (a lot harder to do than you would imagine!). They will go up on our fall bulletin board next week for you to enjoy.
  • For our letter of the week we made firefly sun catchers. Using contact paper the children ripped up yellow tissue paper and stuck it on. In addition to being all about “F” it was a great fine motor activity.
  • For “F” we also read our scholastic letter of the week book, “Fifi Ferret’s Flute, by Samantha Bergen and talked about what words begin with the letter “F”
  • Finally, we were thrilled that the weather was great and we were able to see so many of your children at the Montclare Fall Picnic. It was such fun.
Have a great long weekend everyone!

Karen and Rebecca
