Dear Honey Bear Room Parents,

It’s been another amazing week in the Honey Bear Room here at MCS!  We continued with our transportation unit and the children are getting excited for our upcoming trip to Victorian Gardens.

  • Friday, May 31st - Trip to Victorian Gardens.  Meet us at the entrance at 10:00 am.  Bring a bag lunch and a snack please

Dear Honey Bear Room Families,

We’ve had an incredible week in the Honey Bear Room.  The children began our Transportation unit and we had a terrific time performing The Little Red Hen!
 
Theme This Week:

  • Steam Train, Dream Train, by Sherri Dusker Rinker
  • Taxi Dog, by Debra and Sal Barracca
  • My Truck Is Stuck, by Kevin Lewis and Daniel Kirk
 
Places We Went:
  • Music with Noel
  • Gym 2 and the roof
 
Classroom Activities:
  • Sorted rubber vehicles by color and type.
  • Made traffic lights and learned a new song sung to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star:”

  • Sequenced trains by numbers.
  • Made adorable 3-D trains.
  • Did a fire truck floor puzzle and practiced tracing and writing our names.
 
Highlights:
  • Our Little Red Hen performance was a big hit!  The children were terrific and they really learned a lot about the theatre process.
  • The cast party!
 
Looking Forward To:
  • May 31st trip to Victorian Gardens.  Meet us at the entrance to Wollman Rink at 10:00 a.m.  One adult per child and no siblings please!
  • June 7th Last Day of school.  Fiesta in the classroom at 11:30!

Dear Honey Bear Room Families,

The Honey Bears had a terrific week at school.  We talked about Mother’s Day and rehearsed for our Little Red Hen performance.  The children are really looking forward to it!

Books We Read:

  • Are You My Mother by P.D. Eastman
 
Places We Went:
  • Assembly with Noel
  • The Roof and Gym 2
 
Classroom Activities:
  • Played a measuring game and made shapes using rubber bands and our Geo boards.
  • Practiced tracing our names and did all of our HWOT activities for the letter W.
  • Made adorable cards and gifts for Mother’s Day.
 
Highlights:
  • We had assembly with Noel.  The children love hearing and singing all of the songs!
  • We had a full dress rehearsal with props and costumes. 
 
Looking Forward To:
  • Tuesday, May 14th the Honey Bears perform The Little Red Hen 9:15 in Gym 3.
  • Cast party immediately following in the Honey Bear Room.

We’ve had an awesome week here at MCS!  The children have been rehearsing and they can’t wait for all of you to see the performance.  Don’t forget: 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 14th in Gym 3!  Cast party to follow in the Honey Bear Room.

  • The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza, by Philemon Sturges
  • The Little Red Hen and the Pasover Matzah, by Leslie Kimmelman
 
Places We Went:
  • Art with Janae and Julia
  • Gym 2 and Gym 3
 
Classroom Activities:
  • We had fun with all of our HWOT activities for the letter N.
  • The children played shape matching and button counting games.
  • They had cutting practice and did beading with small beads to make N necklaces.
 
Highlights:
  • We watched a film version of The Little Red Hen.
  • The Honey Bears enjoyed last year’s performance.
  • They worked hard on our “set” for the show!
  • We celebrated Miles’ and Andrew’s 4th birthdays.  Happy Birthday Boys!
 
Looking Forward To:
  • Tuesday, May 14th, The Little Red Hen.  9:15 am in Gym 3 with cast party to follow in the HB room.

Dear Honey Bear Room Families,

It’s been a wonderful week in the Honey Bear Room.  We’ve been having fun practicing for our performance in May!  Please read the update below to see what else the children have been up to.
 
Theme This Week:
  • Bugs, Insects and Birds
  • The letter M
 
Books We Read:
  • Bugs, Bugs, Bugs, by Bob Barner
  • The Very Lazy Ladybug, by Isobel Finn
  • Gotta Go, Gotta Go, by Sam Swope
 
Places We Went:
  • Art Studio with Janae and Julia
  • The Roof
 
Classroom Activities:
  • We voted for our favorite bugs- Most of us like butterflies!
  • Made beautiful butterflies that are hanging on our outside board.
  • Put bees in size order, did a butterfly puzzle and butterfly shape match.
  • Had fun cutting caterpillars.
  • Read a Scholastic Magazine called Backyard Insects.
  • Next week, we will continue with Bugs, Insects and Birds and we will not be doing a letter due to the short week.
 
Highlights:
  • We’ve really begun to dive into our roles for The Little Red Hen.  The children have heard many versions of the story and are exploring character development.  The Honey Bears are learning new songs and where they will be standing on stage. 
  • We also discussed costumes and props and the role they play in a performance. 
  • Soon, the children will be tackling scenery!

Dear Honey Bear Room Families,

It’s been a wonderful week in the Honey Bear Room!  The weather has been improving and it’s starting to feel like Spring.
 
Theme This Week:
  • Gardening
  • The letter V
 
Books We Read:
  • The Tiny Seed, by Eric Carle
  • Flower Garden, by Eve Bunting
 
Places We Went:
  • Library with Lindsay
  • The roof and Gym2
  • Music
 
Classroom Activities:
  • We painted flowerpots and planted string bean seeds.  The Honey Bears can’t wait to see them grow!
  • We did a seed grows sequence story, traced and colored a flower and put together a plant parts puzzle. 
  • The children counted flowers to match the correct flower pot and used our felt board to tell a gardening story.
  • We read a Scholastic Magazine titled Here Comes the Sunflower and the children couldn’t believe how tall sunflowers can get!
 
Highlights:
  • The class had a ball making and eating “dirt.”  We made chocolate pudding and combined it with a crushed Oreo and a gummy worm.  What a yummy treat!
  • We learned a new song about flowers to the tune of “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.”

  • Clara Nephew was our Person of the Week.  She did an amazing job telling us about her poster and her family.  Her mom read King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub by Audrey Wood.  Then we made beaded jewelry with pipe cleaners and beads.  What a fun morning!

Dear Honey Bear Room Families,

Welcome back from Spring Break!  The children have settled in nicely and we are really excited about our upcoming performance of The Little Red Hen.
 
Theme This Week:
  • Spring
  • The letter A
 
Books We Read:
  • The Little Red Hen, by Lucinda McQueen
  • How Do You Know It’s Spring, by Allan Fowler
  • Hopper Hunts For Spring, by Marcus Pfister
 
Places We Went:
  • Gym 3
  • Roof
 
Classroom Activities:
  • We made beautiful Spring placemats to use during snack.
  • Did all of our HWOT activities for the letter A and played a rainbow count and match game.
  • Made umbrella patterns and did rain drop tracing.
  • We also made a class chart on how we know it’s Spring.
 
Highlights:
  • The weather is getting warmer, so we made it outside!
  • The children started learning about The Little Red Hen.  Our performance will be on May 14th.  The Honey Bears are looking forward to singing new songs and wearing costumes.  We have started by comparing the characters from different versions of the story.  We can’t wait!

Dear Honey Bear Room Parents,

The Honey Bears had a terrific week at school.  We began learning about Spring and had some fun with wind!
 
Theme This Week:
  • Spring and Wind.
  • The letter of the week was K.
 
Books We Read:
  • The Wind Blew, by Pat Hutchins.
  • The Little Red Hen and the Passover Matzoh, by Leslie Kimmelman.
 
Places We Went:
  • The roof for some climbing and sliding.
  • Movement with Lindsay.
 
Classroom Activities:
  • Explored with wind and played with pinwheels.
  • Read a Scholastic Magazine called, “Up, Up, Up!”
  • Used straws to try and move objects with wind/air.  We charted the results.
  • Played a count and match kite game.
  • Made adorable wind socks.
  • Used our flip crayons to practice tracing from top to bottom. 
  • Practiced cutting and lacing. 
  • Did all of our HWOT activities for the letter K.
 
Highlights:
  • We’ve slowly been introducing the children to the story of the Little Red Hen.  We will be performing our own version for you in May.  More details to follow. 
  • Assembly with Noel.
  • Finally the weather was cooperating so we had a chance to use the roof!

Dear Honey Bear Room Parents,
              
We’ve had another awesome week at school!  We continued with the five senses, had a snow day and the Honey Bears enjoyed a lot of birthdays!  Read the update below about our activities for the week.
 
Theme This Week:
  • The Five Senses.  The Honey Bears focused on touch taste and smell.
  • R was the letter of the week.
 
Books We Read:
  • My Five Senses, by Aliki.
  • The Five Senses, Touch, by Maria Rius.
  • The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza, by Philemon Sturgis.
 
Places We Went:
  • Art studio with Janae and Julia.  The children painted with sponges and q-tips.
  • Gym 2.
 
Classroom Activities:
  • Used various materials to create original “touch” collages.
  • Worked on size order, cutting and patterning. 
  • Played a smell guessing game.  The children took turns guessing what they were smelling.  They loved oranges and perfume the best. 
  • Took a vote on what we liked best-salty pretzels or sweet chocolate chips.  We also voted on our favorite lunches!  Lots of us like pasta, pizza or sandwiches.
  • Did all of our HWOT activities for the letter R.
 
Highlights:
  • Maxwell Guercio was our Person of the Week.  His mom read Llama, Llama Red Pajama and Maxwell did an amazing job telling us about his poster.  Then the Honey Bears had a blast playing carnival games.  There was a beanbag toss and fun with hula hoops.  Afterwards we listened to Maxwell’s favorite song, We Will Rock You by Queen! 
  • Ashley, Brooklyn and Wyatt all celebrated their birthday’s.  Happy 4th birthday to our Honey Bear friends!

Dear Honey Bear Room Families,

It’s been a terrific week in our classroom.  The Honey Bears have been learning about the Five Senses and had fun with the letter of the week. 
 
Theme This Week:
  • The Five Senses.
  • B was the letter of the week.
 
Books We Read:
  • Look, Listen and Learn, by Susan Canizares.
  • The Little Red Hen, by Lucinda McQueen
 
Places We Went:
  • Library with Lindsay.  She read the folktale Three Billy Goats Gruff.
  • Gym 3!
 
Classroom Activities:
  • Played a Five Senses matching game with manipulatives.
  • Played a Five Senses size order game and a Five Senses matching game with pictures. 
  • Examined our eyes in the mirror and discussed their color and shape. 
  • Made binoculars and sorted Fruit Loops by color. 
  • Played sound bingo and made music with all types of instruments.
 
Highlights:
  • We used our binoculars to see out the classroom window.  NYC is filled with wonderful things to see!
  • Lydia Tiraspolsky was our Person of the Week.  Her dad read The Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle and From Head to Toe by Eric Carle.  The children really enjoyed being the animals.  Lydia did an amazing job telling us about her pictures and herself.  She also showed us some terrific gymnastics moves!
