Week of 3/11

3/15/2019

Dear Blue Room Families:

We had another exciting week!  Below is an update on what the Blue Room children learned this week at Montclare.

Books we read:
  • Stella Louella’s Runaway Book, by Lisa Campbell Ernst
  • Lucky Tucker, by Leslie McGuirk
  • The Littlest Leprechaun, by Brandi Dougherty

Specialist Activities:
  • Assembly with Noel were we sang “Everyday Heroes,” an original adaptation of Bowie's "Heroes" written by our very own Jenny Bruce.

 Classroom Activities:
  • We culminated our study of the library with a visit from the librarian from the New York Public Library. She read us some stories and taught us all about the rules of the library.  We were excited to hear that we would be receiving our own library cards after break.
  • We talked about the upcoming holiday, Saint Patrick’s Day and four leaf clovers. This lead to a discussion about luck. The class decided that being lucky means you get a lot of what you want, get to do things you want and be with people you want. With this discussion in mind we each wrote about what makes us lucky.
  • After reading a story and about leprechauns we each illustrated our very own sneaky leprechaun and gave it a name.
  • With leprechauns in mind we were excited to see a gift from Lucky the Leprechaun in our classroom. He left us a box of Lucky Charms cereal. We discussed what we could do with this treat and decided to practice our graphing with the marshmallows. We had to sort and count the marshmallows. After filling up our graph we reviewed that using a graph is a good chart that helps you see how many of each you have without even counting!
  • In science we continued our study of liquid density using water, food coloring and sugar. First we made four cups of different colored water. We had red, yellow, blue and green. Next we added different amounts of sugar into each color. When we combined the waters in a straw and a bottle the colors did not mix they created a layered rainbow . This was because we changed the density of each color by adding different amounts into each color. This experiment allowed us to use prior knowledge from previous experiments and to review the concepts of liquid density. It also allowed us to make a rainbow -- but we are still searching for the pot of gold at the end of it. :)
