Week of 1/14

1/18/2019

Dear Blue Room Families

This week we learned all about Penguins and the importance of Martin Luther King Jr’s message.

Specialists activities:
  • We were excited to return to the Art Studio.

  Books we have Read
  • Penguins!, by Anne Schreiber
  • Penguins, by Caroline Norsk
  • Cuddly Dudley, by Jez Alborough
  • Penguins, by Gail Gibbons

Specialists activities:
  • Art Studio

Classroom Activities:
  • We researched and learned several penguin facts and about different penguin species.
  • We each illustrated our very own penguin on aluminum foil using markers and paint and recalled and wrote one penguin fact to share on our outside bulletin board.
  • We learned that Emperor penguins carry their eggs in between their feet and practiced this in the classroom using fake eggs. This allowed us to get some gross motor activity and was a blast.
  • We also continued our classroom winter exhibit by adding information about penguins.
  • We had a penguin adoption center. Where the children could “adopt” their very own toy penguin.
  • In Math we played cup challenge. The children practiced their counting and number sequencing by stacking cups in order from one to twenty five.
  • We discussed the importance of Martin Luther King Jr’s dream of being kind and loving one another. We each illustrated and dictated our own dream to form our “Quilt of Dreams”.

Week of 1/7

1/11/2019

Dear Blue Room Parents,

This week we were so excited to see our friends and become snow experts.

Reminders:

**If you have not done so already please send in a change of clothing for your child’s cubby. We sent them home before break.

Specialists activities:
  • School-wide assembly with Noel- we performed "Let It Be"

Classroom Activities:
  • We were excited to see our Blue Room friends and begin 2019 together.
  • We discussed winter and the many weather changes and fun activities.
  • We researched and learned several snowflake facts including different types and symmetry. This allowed us to explore the math concept of symmetry by creating several snowflakes with this concept in mind.
  • We worked on our fine motor to create beaded snowflakes to hang in our classroom.
  • We learned a poem entitled “Rainbow Snowmen” and then responded by writing and illustrating what we would do with rainbow snow. This allowed us to work on our pre-reading skills by learning the words to the poem and creating a classroom book with our responses.
  • We discussed the real rainbow snow that appears both man made and natural during science. We discussed the black and yellow snow we see in our streets in Manhattan. We were amazed to learn that in some mountain ranges algae can change the color of snow and make it red, pink, yellow and even green.
